Bedfordshire’s first micropub The Old Transporter Ale House – located in Henlow Camp opened towards the end of 2014 and has been going from strength to strength ever since.
The couple of Bedford Road, Stephen & June Topham, refurbished the previous ‘blockbuster’ store a year ago to create a small, warm, friendly ale house – the first of it’s kind in the area. While they admit the process of setting this up was not simple, the success of the new micropub could encourage others to the idea. With over 100 micropubs now across the UK the idea is quickly catching on and proving to be a great success.
June said:
“It has been really great. It’s attracting local people who can walk here AND some people have even walked from as far away as Shefford.
“People have commented on the fact they like the relaxed atmosphere and with ales, beer and wine as well as soft drinks on offer there is something for everyone.”
“We’re really putting our soul into the micropub and we know from the feedback it is totally worth it.”
While The Old Transporter Ale House is doing well, it wasn’t easy for the couple. With the pair working over 150 hours a week between them with no time to relax, this hard work and dedication really shows.
